MemberThe Volunteer Involving Organization Society (VIO Society) started in 2004 as a loose network under the name Volunteer Involving Organizations Network (VIO). It is an umbrella of organisations that work in development through volunteering and with volunteers to promote volunteerism as a means to development. It was officially inaugurated in May, 2008 and registered as a Society in September, 2014. It is a national network whose membership is open to government, international and national non-governmental organisations, institutions, foundations, corporates and community-based organisations across the Republic of Kenya.
Since its formation, the network has strived to take the lead in streamlining volunteerism in Kenya. They have worked with the government in close collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection to develop the National Volunteerism Policy, which was adopted by the Cabinet in February, 2016. Together, they have since developed a National Volunteerism Bill 2019 which is at the State Law Office for Redrafting and later to be presented to Parliament.
The VIO Society works closely with the government to ensure that VIOs in Kenya work as guided by the Volunteerism Policy and later by Law. It recognises the unique programmes/projects offered by each member organisation and, where appropriate, enters into partnerships to enhance volunteerism in Kenya. They are the acknowledged network which acts as a coordinating link between government and international, national and local voluntary organisations in Kenya. Their members have been involved in different areas of voluntary activities aimed at development and peace, in line with the national development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Their Vision is “A synergised Volunteer Community”, while their Mission is “To engage in research, advocacy, networking, partnerships and training to promote volunteerism.”
The Volunteer Involving Organization Society (VIO Society) inició su andadura en 2004 como una red informal bautizada con el nombre Volunteer Involving Organizations Network (VIO). Engloba a organizaciones que trabajan en el desarrollo a través del voluntariado y con voluntarios para promover el voluntariado como medio para el desarrollo. Su inauguración oficial tuvo lugar en mayo de 2008 y se registró como sociedad en septiembre de 2014. Se trata de una red nacional cuya membresía está abierta a organismos públicos, organizaciones no gubernamentales nacionales e internacionales, instituciones, fundaciones, empresas y organizaciones comunitarias de la República de Kenia.
Desde su creación, la red ha puesto todo su empeño en dirigir la racionalización del voluntariado en Kenia. Ha trabajado con el Gobierno, en estrecha colaboración con el Ministerio de Trabajo y Protección Social, para elaborar la política nacional del voluntariado, que adoptó el Gabinete en febrero de 2016. Juntos han desarrollado desde entonces un proyecto de ley nacional sobre el voluntariado de 2019, que se encuentra en la fase de reformulación en la Oficina Jurídica del Estado y se presentará posteriormente ante el Parlamento.
La VIO Society colabora estrechamente con el Gobierno para garantizar que las VIO de Kenia trabajan según la política del voluntariado y, más adelante, según la ley. Reconoce los programas y proyectos excepcionales que ofrece cada organización miembro y, cuando resulta conveniente, se alía para mejorar el voluntariado en Kenia. Es la red reconocida que actúa como vínculo de coordinación entre el Gobierno y las organizaciones de voluntariado internacionales, nacionales y locales de Kenia. Sus miembros han participado en diferentes ámbitos de las actividades voluntarias destinadas al desarrollo y la paz, en consonancia con el programa nacional de desarrollo y los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.
Su visión es “Una comunidad de voluntarios con sinergia”, y su misión es “Involucrase en investigación, defensa, interconexión, alianzas y formación dirigidas a promover el voluntariado.”
