Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity found its earliest inspirations as a grassroots movement on an interracial community farm in South Georgia, USA. Since its founding in 1976, the Christian housing organization has grown to become a leading global non-profit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.

Our work is structured through four Area Offices in the United States and Canada (Atlanta, GA); Latin America and the Caribbean (San Jose, Costa Rica); Europe, the Middle East and Africa (Bratislava, Slovakia); and Asia and the Pacific (Manila, Philippines).  Habitat for Humanity also engages international volunteers through flagship programs: Through the Global Village program volunteers serve in areas such as house building, advocating for policy while building, disaster recovery, minor and major home repairs, energy efficiency projects, and WASH. In addition, through the Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter, Habitat for Humanity facilitates more efficient and inclusive housing market systems making affordable housing possible for millions more families. The Terwilliger Center consolidates more than a decade of experience in developing market-based solutions for housing and the body of work resulting from these early efforts, formerly referred to as the Center for Innovation in Shelter and Finance. Through the Terwilliger Center, Habitat will accelerate and facilitate better functioning inclusive housing markets to enable more than 8 million people to access to improved shelter solutions by 2020. The ShelterTech initiative matches skilled volunteers, from corporate executives and investors to academics, government officials and innovators as mentors.

Diversity, equity and inclusion is central and imperative for Habitat for Humanity. We believe in a world where everyone — no matter who we are or where we come from — deserves a decent place to live. And we recognize that to create this world, our work must always break down barriers, bring people of all backgrounds together, and generate equity, respect and lasting change. In the tradition of the radical inclusivity that infused our birthplace Koinonia Farm, Habitat’s leaders have committed to creating an environment where humility, open communication, dialogue and listening are our standard. As a space where people of all races, all faiths and all backgrounds come together in a common cause, we also commit to being actively anti-racist.
