The role of color in a child’s life

Red, orange, yellow, green. Is the role of color so important in a child’s life? Caring for the right color scheme for the baby is a sign of modern life. Our grandparents would be surprised at the question of what color they selected clothes or interior items for their daughters and sons … So interest in this topic can be considered a good sign of family affluence. Natalya Olegovna RYSKINA, child psychologist, psychotherapist at the University Children’s Center at the Moscow City Psychological and Pedagogical University, will help us understand what color has one or another effect on the mood and behavior of babies, whether there can be universal approaches to the question of choosing the most suitable tones for your child . – Natalia Olegovna, tell us which colors affect children positively, soothingly, and which ones have an exciting effect? Why? – It is believed that the calming effect on the child is made by soft, pastel colors: light green, light green, pale yellow, beige, light blue. All bright colors excite the nervous system. The most exciting baby’s psyche is bright red, but there are no strict rules. It would seem that everything is clear: for a hyperactive child, tones are desirable that promote relaxation and balance, for example, a soothing blue, light-green weakening arousal. And for a passive, unemotional baby, colors that stimulate activity, uplifting, are suitable. In fact, everything is not so simple: you need to take into account the uniqueness, individuality of each child and you should not think that by surrounding a closed dreamer with bright tones, you can make him fun and moving. It is necessary to look for the true causes of this or that state and mood of the baby. – Is it possible to determine his mood by the color that the kid chooses to draw? – The determination of the child’s mood according to the color chosen for drawing cannot be approached mechanically. Indeed, there are several psychological techniques for determining the emotional state of a small person using his preferred color. But it cannot be said that black is always the color of depression, orange is the color of joy, and so on … The color preferences of a child are individually justified. However, elements of some methods for determining the emotional state of a child using color can be applied to parents at home. For example, after the kid has drawn something, suggest that he choose the pencil (it is desirable that there are no more than eight), which he likes most in color. When the choice is made, remove it from the view of the child. Invite your child to find the most beautiful of the remaining flowers, and so on until the last pencil. The first three pencils chosen by the child can be considered the colors of emotional well-being, the next three – colors emotionally neutral, but those that the baby was reluctant to choose last, can symbolize emotional distress. Children’s color. What color scheme should a children’s room be? Choosing the colors of wallpaper, coverings, furniture for the nursery, you must remember that, firstly, they should not be many and, secondly, they should not be bright. This will provoke the child’s psycho-emotional arousal. It is better to use pastel (pale yellow, beige, pale blue, light green, pink) tones, given that the children’s room is most often also a bedroom for the baby. If the color scheme of the room is too bright, saturated and cheerful, it will be difficult for the child to calm down and fall asleep. Dark tones are also undesirable – the saturated blue color can cause an unconscious feeling of anxiety in sensitive, emotional crumbs. The play area can “activate” the child. To do this, it is better to use bright toys, paintings, wallpaper inserts against the background of calm basic tones as contrasting color spots.
